Bio

Riva Starr learned economy the hard way: as a young DJ in Naples, he sometimes stretched only twenty or thirty records across five-hour birthday sets, using instrumentals, acappellas and both sides of a twelve-inch to invent new combinations. Born Stefano Miele, he first established himself in breakbeat as Madox before deliberately starting again under the Riva Starr name and moving toward house. The change did not erase his earlier instincts. His records still treat samples as doors into other musical cultures, moving between playful vocal cuts, muscular drums and left-field references without settling into one narrow formula. Based in East London for much of his Riva Starr career, Miele also founded Snatch! Records as a platform for forward-looking club music. He continues to describe himself primarily as a DJ, and that perspective explains the directness of his productions: every unusual idea ultimately has to work in a room full of dancers.
