From the very beginning it was planned that Peppermint Jam would remain an independently-distributed label as German distributors, at that time, were more focused on techno and trance, leaving vocal house largely untouched. The turning point, however, was the year 1996 – and Peppermint Jam’s first visit to the Winter Music Conference in Miami (an important international trade fair for electronic music). This milestone in the company’s history resulted in license enquiries from labels such as MAW as well as international collaborations. After their first self-produced releases, the label signed Ruffneck and “Everybody be Somebody” became their first real hit, soon followed by Boris Dlugosch’s “Keep Pushin” and “Hold Your Head Up High” (both featuring Inaya Day).

A key track in the label’s hugely successful 18 year history was, of course, 1998’s worldwide smash hit, ‘Horny.’

“A proper accident,” chuckles Mousse T. “The backing track grew out of the club version of a Michael Jackson remix I had done for his song “Ghost.” I had the beats and the groove and finished the production around 5 in the morning. I wanted to put it in the bin but when I played it Errol and Roger Sanchez they said “you have to put it out”. We called it “Horny” because of the horns and then wrote the lyrics around that. The result changed our lives.”

On the back of the song’s success, the label’s increased revenue and profile attracted some high profile collaborations, including the classic Boris Dlugosch rework of ‘Sing It Back’ by Moloko, and the infamous ‘Sex Bomb,’ featuring Tom Jones (a UK Top 3 smash). “Success allowed a bigger vision,” says Mousse T.

Our symbol goes back to time where African American slaves were fleeing in search of their freedom to understand the truth in freedom by breaking free from the chains and running away from oppression.  This symbol was carved in the floors of various sympathetic churches and homes through the Underground Railroad that helped slaves escape the horrific untruth in their lives to find true freedom and to be recognized as contributing human lives in society.

Purveyor Underground

Founded in May, 2023, Category 1 Music isn't exactly the "new kid on the block"! It's both a record label and music publishing company with many years of background and experience in house music, with a special emphasis on creating soulful vocal productions by the genre's most talented artists, producers and remixers.

Initial releases include "Won't Give Up"/George G-Spot Jackson & Ed Ramsey, "Magic Carpet Ride"/Aires Adora & "A New Day"/Ron Carroll. Featuring remixes by Eric Kupper & Dr Packer, these tracks reflect a combination of the highest level of vocal artistry, production talent and remixing skills. Beyond these releases, Category 1 Music has plans for an additional 7 singles for the remainder of 2023 as well as a full-length album featuring multiple artists produced by Ron Carroll. For the future, we plan to continue utilizing the talents of Eric Kupper, Dr Packer and other renowned producers/remixers such as Michael Gray, and David Penn, and great artists such as Jocelyn Brown, Kathy Brown & Shawn Christopher. It's a combination that has been extremely successful in the past and will no doubt produce great floor fillers in the coming years.
