Before house music, Nico Stojan learned clarinet and saxophone through classical music and jazz, then carried the phrasing of hip-hop, funk and soul into his DJing. The Berlin-born producer began mixing on turntables as a teenager in the 1990s and later became closely identified with Bar25, where extended sets could unfold across an entire night and morning. His 2015 album Twisted Manners placed that warm, unhurried approach into a full-length format. A year later he co-founded Ouïe with Acid Pauli, establishing an outlet for sample-based, genre-crossing electronic music; their Call of the Valley opened the label’s catalogue. Stojan died in July 2026. His final period included work through SONARA and collaborations with Tooker, David Mayer and Acid Pauli, including I Am, released shortly after his death. The catalogue he left behind joins acoustic musicianship, hip-hop-informed selection and the open-ended spirit of Berlin’s after-hours culture.
