Before the Basement Boys had a studio legacy, Thommy Davis and his friends carried demos on reel-to-reel tape to New Jersey’s Zanzibar, where Tony Humphries would test them in the club. Davis recalled that ritual in a 2020 interview while looking back on more than four decades in house music. In late-1980s Baltimore he joined Teddy Douglas and Jay Steinhour in the Basement Boys, a production team whose work became entwined with records by Ultra Naté, Crystal Waters and other major vocalists. His long partnership with DJ Spen later extended from production into label-building: Davis co-founded Quantize Recordings, manages Unquantize and shares A&R decisions across a catalogue that ranges from gospel and soulful house to jazzier, more stripped material. The solo album Mr. Davis, completed over nearly three years, revisited disco and house songs that shaped him. An extensive later catalogue shows the same communal method continuing through remixes, vocal sessions and projects with Spen, MicFreak and Greg Lewis.
