Steve Bug has built labels by narrowing a question, not by chasing a trend. His first imprint, Raw Elements, allowed electro, broken beats, disco, techno and minimal house to coexist, but by 1999 that breadth no longer matched the clearer direction he wanted. After moving to Berlin, he founded Poker Flat Recordings with a more precise focus on deep, minimal and tech-oriented house. The label’s longevity came without a grand forecast—Bug has said he never imagined it would run for more than two decades—but its consistency reflects his habit of treating A&R as an extension of DJing. His own productions follow a similar principle: small shifts in bass, swing and texture matter more than maximal gestures. Even when a track resists him, he keeps revising; for “Montafon”, he recalled rerecording the bass around a dozen times after feedback changed the arrangement. That patience links his studio craft to Poker Flat’s durable, understated identity.
