For Anané, the connection between music and movement begins well before the DJ booth. Her Cape Verdean family included singers, composers and instrument makers; after moving to the United States, she discovered the freedom of club culture on the dancefloors of Providence and New York. Singing, songwriting and dancing became overlapping parts of a musical life that draws on those African roots as readily as disco, soul and house.
She toured as a vocalist with Elements of Life and developed her solo work through Ananesworld, while DJing opened another way to share the music she loved. With Louie Vega, she created The Ritual, taking their approach to parties in New York and Ibiza, including a season at Club Chinois. Through Nulu Music and Nulu Electronic, she has also made space for other producers working with Afro house and Afro tech.
Her Take A Ride project returns to the richness of live musicianship. Produced with Louie Vega and Josh Milan, it includes strings arranged by Leroy Burgess. Anané has described seeing those players come together in the studio as a reminder of what she values in making records: the people, experience and emotion behind the finished song.
