Bio

Booka Shade treat the stage as part of the studio. German musicians Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier spent years producing pop before helping establish Get Physical Music and developing their own electronic work. Their 2006 album “Movements” was shaped directly by touring: the duo tested material in live sets, kept tracks that connected physically and wrote parts of the record as a document of places they had played. That feedback loop explains why Booka Shade performances are not conventional DJ sets. Merziger handles keyboards and synthesizers, Kammermeier drives the drums, and both rework familiar pieces for the room while keeping their melodies recognisable. “Body Language”, created with M.A.N.D.Y., and “Mandarine Girl” became enduring reference points, but the duo continued building albums and later founded Blaufield Music. Booka Shade’s balance is unusually durable: detailed electronic production for close listening, arranged with the muscular pacing and visual awareness of an electronic rock show.
