For Smalltown Collective, house music connects studio experimentation with years of DJ experience. The Switzerland-based duo brings together Remo Müller and Michel 'Miguel' Staubli, whose respective backgrounds in production and DJing inform a sound spanning deep house, tech house and techno. Their first releases appeared on Malec in 2008; a continuing relationship with Plastic City has encompassed their own productions, remixes and the Helvetia mix compilation. Early influences include M/A/R/R/S and Bomb the Bass. In a 2012 interview, they described building tracks through shared studio sessions, following changes of mood rather than fixing the finished sound in advance. Groove and the demands of the club remained central, with room for warmer textures and excursions into chill-out music. That range continues through projects such as Not Ok on Plastic City and the more melodic Feelings / Please Message EP on Hive Audio Dark.
