Bio

The Music Institute opened in May 1988 at 1315 Broadway in downtown Detroit, and Alton Miller was one of the three men behind it, alongside Anthony Pearson, who records as Chez Damier, and George Baker. It was Black-owned, ran on membership cards and sold juice instead of alcohol, and it lasted about eighteen months before closing in November 1989. Miller programmed the Saturday nights, called Back To Basics, around vocal-heavy disco records, a looser counterweight to the club's harder Friday techno. He has produced and DJed out of Detroit ever since. In February 2026 Yoruba Records released his version of the Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine song Don't Go Lose It Baby, sung by Xoli with Amp Fiddler on vibes, executive-produced by Osunlade, who also supplied one of its three remixes alongside Craig Smith and Coflo.
