60 Hertz Project joins the instinct of a DJ with the hands-on detail of a live band. Founded in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, in 2009, the project is led by Gosiame “BlackJean” Maodi and Siphiwe “SDK” Daniel Kumalo, who compose, play and produce its music together. Jazz, soulful and deep house, broken beat and Afro rhythms form the shared vocabulary.
Their records are grounded in musicianship as well as club rhythm. Recent credits show both members playing the instruments, with Maodi arranging and mixing and Kumalo mastering. Their Colours EP presents the music in both original and broken-beat versions.
Live appearances have included KZN Music Imbizo, Ekurhuleni Music Festival and North West Jazz Festival. Their connection with the wider house community grew through DJ Christos and Ralf GUM, whose GOGO Music released Capricorn, and through collaborations with Dolls Combers and Fast Vision Soul. Alongside those international exchanges, they continue to work from their South African home scene.
