Malin Genie is Amsterdam producer and DJ Nick Putman, whose music moves between house, techno and more experimental rhythmic work. His own catalogue runs through solo releases, collaborations and several aliases, with repetition and small changes often doing more than a dramatic arrangement. Putman has described testing an idea by living with its loop: if it still holds his attention after a long session, he knows it is worth developing. Alongside his work for SlapFunk and his own outlets, he forms Mandar with Lazare Hoche and S.A.M.; the trio also established Oscillat Music. More recent collaborations with Frits Wentink have produced both records and shared DJ sets, including an appearance at Amsterdam’s Shelter. Even the name reflects an interest beyond club music, drawn from the deceptive spirit in Descartes’ philosophy while Putman was studying psychology.
