Bress Underground revisits the house and garage traditions of 1990s New York and London through a contemporary production practice. The artist behind the name, Andrea Calabrese, comes from Puglia, Italy, and places synthesizers and electronic soul at the centre of his musical identity.
That affection for older records reaches into the way he works. Much of his House 2 House EP for GLBDOM was built on an Akai MPC before being finished in software, with the mix taking its cue from the records that inspired it. Releases on Esuoh and Snatch! sit alongside his own output, while his partnership with Ruff Stuff extends from remixing to joint productions. Bress Underground’s interest is in keeping the character of those house roots alive through the sound and feel of new records.
