Nick Curly’s label career began with the sort of conversation that often disappears by morning. As he recalled in an interview, he and Gorge kept meeting at Mannheim parties, talking about music and ideas, until they finally turned those discussions into 8bit Records. Curly had already absorbed the region’s club culture through formative trips to Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, and began DJing as a teenager before moving into production. He later co-founded Cécille with Marc Scholl, creating a second outlet for the deep, rolling house associated with Mannheim’s late-2000s scene. Curly’s own records share that economy: supple bass movement, restrained hooks and enough space for a groove to unfold over a long mix. His continuing partnership with Gorge and his work across 8bit and Cécille make him both a working producer and a curator of the sound that shaped him.
