Bio

Jan Johnston is a Salford-born singer and songwriter whose voice became closely associated with trance through work with BT, Freefall, Chicane and Paul Oakenfold. Her writing life began outside dance music, first in the pop duo JJ and then as a solo artist with the album Naked But for Lilies. A second-hand copy of her music led BT to seek her out. Their partnership produced recordings including Remember and Mercury & Solace, while a sample of her earlier song The Prayer became part of Calling Your Name. Freefall's Skydive brought another enduring vocal collaboration. Johnston signed to Oakenfold's Perfecto in 1999 and moved to Los Angeles to record with Jamie Myerson. Throughout those changes, she has presented herself as a songwriter as much as a dance vocalist, bringing lyrics and melodies to the partnerships that made her voice familiar on club records.
