Battery Operated

"This album is infusing multiple passions of mine: tape loops, soundscapes, circuit-bent hardware, and jungle breaks! A weird mix, I agree, but I've always been drawn to the more experimental side of music.

Most of the sounds on this record have come out of a huge archive of tape loop recordings me and my brother have created whilst making stuff for our music/art project called Battery Operated. We would start by recording hardware synths to tape loops and slowing them right down, running that through a big chain of effects and seeing what came out. We literally recorded everything and archived it for a while. Then, when I was using my DAW, I would open the folder and grab a random loop and drop it into something like the Amigo sampler to grab parts to make pads or little atmospheric phrases. Eventually these little atmospheric pieces became fully formed pieces of music that just had so much texture and a kind of nostalgia built in, somehow.

So adding percussion to some of these was just a matter of time. I never planned this musical path at all — it's fully organic, just experimenting with hardware and software, old technology and cutting-edge new tech too!"
