The first time you hear it, it hits you like a slap in the face. The second time too. And it never stops: ‘The Parable Of Life’, Rabbeat's first full-length album, is one of those records you never tire of, one you can lose yourself in, discovering new nuances every day, whether listened to through headphones or blasted on a dance floor. And when we talk about a slap in the face, we're not just referring to the violence of the productions: here, the slap lands on a cheek wet with salt, and this brutal industrial hardcore is also emotional, alternately luminous and tragic. It's the expression “seeing your life flash before your eyes,” that film of flashbacks you would watch before dying, set to music: each of the twelve tracks revisits one of the stages of the journey, from the birth of “The Symphony Of Life,” the first steps of “Survive,” the discovery of the world of “Mother Earth,” to the resilience of “Sustain”... An album that tells the story of a life starting at the end, looking the Grim Reaper straight in the eye to make him dance. “I think about death to live better,” says French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant in the introduction to the album: that's what The Parable Of Life is all about.

While hardcore music is often dark, it is rarely so epic, grandiose, and free: Rabbeat loves unlikely samples (a cover of Kid Cudi by Lissie, or childhood memories: French singers Joe Dassin and Moustaki, the theme song from a cartoon...) while managing to never fall into kitsch or tedium, allowing himself to visit breakbeats (“The Pursuit Of Happiness”), ambient (“Mother Earth”), ultra-violent (“The Symphony Of Life”) or an undeniable banger (“L'Insouciance”). Anything is possible, as long as it's not lukewarm.

This is nothing new: from his childhood love of blues and rap to his teenage obsession with metal, from smoky trip-hop to Lorn's IDM, Rabbeat has always been obsessive and uncompromising. And every time he fell in love with a genre of music, he wasn't content just to listen to it. He wrote, composed, and recorded with whatever means he had at his disposal, alone, as much out of shyness as perfectionism. He never really shared his creations, which became more electronic after, like any good Lyonnais, an epiphany at Nuits Sonores. Until one day—or rather, one early morning, on his way home from a club—he decided to send one of his tracks to Manu le Malin. It was love at first sight, both artistically and personally. Releasing this first album on MKNK, Manu's label, was an obvious choice, as the two share the same vision of catharsis: extreme melancholy to make sensitive people dance.
