Burned Flags and Ancient Rites offers 3, titular rust-tinged, splintered techno cuts, refracting and sharpening the artist’s early Berlin based work of smeared aesthetics and haunted machinery. Resisting ‘business techno’ sheen, Ackermann adds a skeletal, muscular remix of techno primitivism to an ep of quiet resistance…
In Deepchilds own words “The only way that dance music might ever be deemed ‘apolitical’, would be if it’s historical roots foundations were obliterated and razed to rubble. At this moment, these (particularly Black, Brown, Latin, Queer) historical threads feel more crucial to explore than ever - even as they are actively erased at large by ethno-nationalist interest. I'm confounded by any insistence that club spaces and music should remain neutral or dissociated from the very real call to action to engage at this time.
I’m cognizant that during these fractured times most of us are utterly exhausted and genuinely divided - terrified of using words like ‘genocide’ or ‘fascism’ to name what we see unfolding around in the Middle East and America.
Yet we must be willing to lean into our own shared trauma, legitimate grief and boiling rage at this injustice. What have we have communally allowed to pass to lead us to this moment of polycrisis.? We must be willing to name the unnamable and we must resist. I still believe that club spaces can seed the possibility for genuine change, and its my hope that bold political discource can be fortified by the dance.”
