OST Fox

Composed during a stint in the Southern France city of Marseille, as the name would suggest, the ‘Seulement à Marseille’ LP, translating to Only In Marseille, is a project that captures a space and time in the mind of the usually Berlin-based artist OST FOX. Drawn to the city via a chance meeting with tattoo artist from the city, the artist set out to make an album there, what unfolded over seven weeks was this project and an affinity for Marseille’s music scene such as the L'intermédiaire, events and the incredible collective, Metaphore, as well as the cities blend of grittiness, beauty, incredible food, and most importantly, amazing people.

‘Vieux Port’ opens and sonically captures the elation of arrival in Marseille, a bright and progressive House tinged composition and a counterpart to the more Techno centric feel of the rest of the project. ‘Quartier de Créateurs’ named after the region a large portion of the project was made and perfectly encapsulating its core aesthetic through dynamic synth work, a bouncy bass line and crisp drums. ‘Noailles to nowhere’ then operates a cinematic interlude to ‘Metaphore’, a hazy five and a half minute excursion through fluttering dub chords, pulsing bass, atmospheric strings and a sturdy rhythm section.

‘Le Champ de Mars’ follows and retains a similarly melodious Detroit Techno leaning aesthetic with a focus on delicately intertwined dub synths, a snaking bass groove and saturated drums. ‘L'Intermédiair’ then edges into darker territory with murky bass stabs, even unfolding atmospheric tension and a high octane rhythmic workout. ‘Le Style Marseille’ then begins to wind down the project, leaning into a lower tempo and dream like melodies before the aptly titled ‘Réflexions’ concludes with a contemplative nineties’ electronica feel, fusing twinkling pianos, elongated subs and ethereal textures to perfectly wind down the project.
