If there is one thing electronic music thrives on more than anything else, it's fresh ideas. New takes on worn tempos and standardized drum patterns are what keeps the music continually sounding fresh and renewed. With that in mind we at Terra Null proudly present our sixth offering, entitled "Punishment / Ritual" by Woulg. Traditionally residing in the more experimental realms of IDM and glitch, Greg Debicki aka Woulg is one of electronic music's great undiscovered talents. His skill in sculpting complex and intricate soundscapes has very few rivals. Emerging from the experimental space, for this release he has turned to his focus toward the 170 bpm area, giving what he describes as an "interpretation" of the genre of Drum and Bass. It is a genre that is no stranger to experimentation and there is no one better suited for the task. The lead track of the single, entitled "Punishment" steadily moves from a somber meditation on the new tempo into something far more sinister. What the beginning of the tune accomplishes in building the second half tears out in dramatic fashion, giving the listener a distinct notion of an arc of movement, a dramatic journey, the scope which is rarely accomplished in a single song. Picking up right where "Punishment" ended, "RItual" quickly drops the listener straight into a new kind of madness, frantic and fast percussion litter the searing basslines in such a way that absolutely scorch the ear and subsequently the mind of the listener. Although a small offering in terms of length, "Punishment / Ritual" is grand in scope, and the listener is sure to have truly travelled in some way or another as the EP comes to a close. It is the type of journey that may be uncommon for some in the electronic space, but should be well expected of Terra Null, as we continue to experiment and break new ground in this form of music that we love so much.
