Fono One

Finding solace and calm away from a lot of noise in his remote outpost in Donegal Ireland, Fono One has been rethinking his approach to his work.
This project brings Fone One back to his formative years as a trad musician which was all about improvisation. The first 'electronic' music he made was on cheap drum machines and samplers with a feeble 30 seconds of memory where the performance and improvisation as you recorded (to tape in one take) was about 80% of the composition process. He would then perform the tracks live at gigs as hands-on dub mixes and immediately they would become alive again.

When writing for this project he took to actually ‘performing' the tracks as much as possible with a new analog studio setup and then reign in the recordings and shape the track in the final edit.

8x8:
As well as a straight-up drum workout of the 808 and 808-derived-textures there are some 90s d’n’b sounding pads in 8x8 and a swirling dulcimer sound. A half-remembered John Barry soundtrack floats in and out of the mix giving this Footwork vibe more depth.

Empty Your Mind:
A cliche beat that gets pulled apart gradually over the course of the track before taking the original shape again. The Bruce Lee sample talks about becoming formless and reshaping to constraints that are meant to reinforce that idea. A stabbing synth is pushing the beat apart in the middle section creating a sort of unorthodox calm mood to it even when it's at its most disintegrated.

Juice:
Inspired by a morning spent with friends in San Francisco long ago informed the sound and became the vibe of the track. In one way it is light, sunny, and upbeat, almost veering into R’n’B, however, the joins are all on show leaving space for the unstable tension in the track.

Middle Distance:
In Middle Distance, a nod to daydreaming, we hear a melody pushed through a massive chain of guitar effects to create a shoe-gaze swell and a nostalgic sheen over everything. The tune is underpinned with a really heavy, overdriven beat. The track then becomes about what happens when these two elements feed off each other. "Doing nothing is important to work."
