Gunjack

After a 5 year hiatus, the mighty GUNJACK revives his REPOTRAX imprint to release this 5 track mini album. Straddling the lines between experimental hip hop, footwork, breakcore and neo-soul, "Eleven" would be at home on Ninja Tune or even  the Brainfeeder imprint. Crafted lovingly in Los Angeles, Santiago, Minneapolis and the back woods of Tennessee; this piece shows Gunjack in full superproducer mode with a nod to his west coast roots on every track. "Freddie the Man" bangs into a "grinin"-esque, knock and ping beat before launching into full orchestral instrumentation fit for Dr. Dre enthusiasts or Black Dog fans alike. "City Girl" flexes some serious sampling skills as the Jack flips Japanese city pop into a high energy juke workout powered by sub blasts and 606 percussion. Watch the hook! On "Bad Man Ting" our protagonist invokes sparse and near industrial dancehall vibes that lead with the sub and shout toward dawn. "In a Quiet Place" finds Gunjack in full jazzcore/breakcore mode with huge 3d sound design and glitchy, jazz tinged introspection. Finally, "As She Lives and Breathes" is a heady, west coast jangle with more of Jack's trademark fender rhodes electric piano that wrangles a Madlib style banger under control until the man himself closes the EP with a monophonic synth solo that hearkens images of Vangelis and Flying Lotus in a bodega with some Casio toys. Setting the bar this high is usually a recipe for anti-climax, however, in this it is quite evident that this transcendental piece of sonic craftsmanship is only a taste of things to come from a producer who has fought tooth and nail to survive and excel through adversity.
