Good Luck Mr. Gorsky

Good Luck mr. Gorsky is a Trio formed in 2004 in Thessaloniki, Greece, by Savvas Metaxas, Spyros Emmanouilidis and Thanasis Papadopoulos They are experimenting with a variety of instruments and musical genres to build their own sound. Their music focuses on electronic compositions, using both physical and electronic sound sources. Field recordings, analog synthesizers, prepared piano and trumpet are currently used for creating their compositions.

In this album the trio took a series of improvised sets as a canvas, for creating a more structured composition. This effort was presented in a series of live performances and captured at its best on June 2011, at Bios Cinematheque, Athens. Along with the trio perfmormed video artist Andreas Karaoulanis (bestbefore). No edits were made to the recording.

It's been a few years since reviewing the split CD of Eventless Plot and Good Luck Mr. Gorsky (Vital Weekly 618) and while the first had a couple of more releases on Granny Records, we didn't hear from Gorsky again. Now there is a new LP, recorded live in june 2011 in Athens. Good Luck Mr. Gorsky is a trio of Spiros Emmanouilidis (trumpet, synth, prepared piano samples), Thanasis Papadopoulos (synth, sampler, vocals) and Savvas Metaxas (field recordings procession). Many of the bands on Granny Records share mutual interests. There is always an element of 'real' instruments, field recordings and electronics, mingling together to create atmospheric music that has, occasionally, a rock like texture. Good luck Mr. Gorsky is no different. The chirping of insect sounds, the bouncing synth backdrop and the Throbbing Gristle like trumpet on side, fading into a spacious synth event with glockenspiel (although perhaps these are the prepared piano samples?). The spacious nature of the music is present on both sides of this record, even when it bumps into a more steady rhythm on the second side, it still remains spacious. Here we have music that easily defies any categorization. Ambient, electronic, pop (but then, not really), maybe even post rock, soundscaping: all of that is in there and it makes great sense but as said: file under what exactly? Maybe we should not care about such thing? Let's do that and simply enjoy the record at hand. (FdW)

''Featuring two side-long performances recorded live at Bios Cinematheque in Athens in June, 2011, this self-titled twelve-inch vinyl outing (available in an edition of 300 copies) is about as pure a representation of Good Luck Mr. Gorsky's sound as one might hope to hear. Having formed in 2004 in Thessaloniki, Greece, Savvas Metaxas, Spiros Emmanouilidis, and Thanasis Papadopoulos are by now well-acquainted with one another's creative impulses and consequently a clear sense of cohesiveness emerges from the improvs. And it's truly a natural record of their interactions as no edits were made to the recording.
Metaxas (field recordings), Emmanouilidis (synth, prepared piano samples, trumpet), and Papadopoulos (synth, sampler, vocals) created the album's experimental material using both physical and electronic sound sources. The album opens with trumpet shudders and outdoors field recordings draped across a pulsating synth base, before moving into different territory where bell percussion tinklings and prepared piano flourishes rub shoulders with spacier synth effects and a background stream of nocturnal insect chirp. Everything unfolds at a comfortable pace, and the trio avoids ear-shattering spikes in volume, preferring instead to keep the dynamic and volume levels at an even keel. Having said that, side two does up the intensity level slightly when it underpins ghost-like wails and synth squiggles with a plodding rhythm base, but the music never loses its fundamentally atmospheric character, and that's never more true than when it descends into a haze of trumpet squalls and chanting voices as it nears its end.
The impression created is of three like-minded individuals deploying their respective sound generators so as to collectively shape the explorative and organically developing mass. It's not a game-changer but rather a modest and unpretentious recording whose presumed aim is to capture the Good Luck Mr. Gorsky sound in its most unadulterated form, and in that regard it definitely succeeds.

''Good Luck Mr. Gorsky is the creation of three musicians based in Thessaloniki, Spiros Emmanouilidis, Thanasis Papadopoulos and Savvas Metaxas. The project was founded in 2004 and their trajectory has been marked by a series of releases mainly on their home label granny records. This new 12-inch limited vinyl release (only 300 copies available for sale) we find them illustrating their most essential building blocks in a rounded way. Recorded live in July 2011 at Bios Cinematheque in Athens, the album offers a well balanced set of two long-form, unedited improvisations consisting of analog synthesizers, prepared piano, trumpets, field recordings and other found and sampled sounds.
Side A evolves into a recurring synth motif that stirs around it the glimmering presence of trumpet and metallic percussive sounds, sounds of insects and glitches all fitting well together while not engulfing the recording. And this is one of the nicest things about the release; the sounds resemble the feeling of a surrounding space where you can move with comfort, an accessible yet odd space. Side B takes us into a more syncopated universe where the intent seems to be a tiny bit louder while still retaining the essence and mood of Side A. Overall, fans who like Eleh, Eno & Cluster, Marcus Fischer or even Philip Jeck will appreciate, for different reasons, the album as it offers an interesting, multi-textured and coherent listening experience and a nice introduction to the world of Good Luck Mr. Gorsky.''

These organic elements greatly enhance the listening experience. It is clear this trio have a great ear for crafting pleasant soundscapes. To often experimental music gets bogged down into unbearable sonic territory that is harsh and challenging to enjoy. Good Luck Mr. Gorsky avoids the harshness of free jazz and noise music on and while they are not ambient music per say they create a thoroughly enjoyable and calming listening experience on side A of the record. The B side is a much more upfront and rhythmic affair that allows for a little less open space and the atmosphere is a bit more claustrophobic. The intricate layers and juxtapositions of sounds will warrant many repeat listens. I would highly recommend both of these new releases from Granny Records even if you have to order them from Greece.
