SAL proudly presents our 2024 Lunar New Year Compilation, with Kim Ann Foxman, Cora, Why Be, Soda Plains, River Moon, Ennio, and label founder Lawrence Lee. 

The overarching theme that unites this compilation is the sense of nostalgia surrounding familial and ancestral connections. This theme holds a special resonance for many of us—some who experience it firsthand through their roots and homelands, while others grasp and feel it through the stories passed down to them. We’ve kept this theme open, allowing each artist the freedom to interpret and incorporate it into their music. 

River Moon’s “Sinking and Floating” introduces the compilation, unwinding in ethereal soundscapes and wandering pads, floating over crashing drums. SAL’s own Lawrence Lee merges ambient techno, IDM, and East Asian influences in “Cyan Crush”, combining plucked strings with dreamy synths and downtempo breaks, finished with touches of D&B. Expansive and cinematic, Why Be and Soda Plain’s “Smokey” collaboration is enveloped in a mysterious veil of dramatic melodies punctuated with gusty rhythmic elements.

Cora’s track “Mountain High is an uplifting dance floor filler with twinkling synths and a sweeping acid bass, featuring angelic vocals from Cora herself. With a rattling bass line and whirling synths, Ennio’s “Blok M” showcases his signature high-energy sound and clever production. “Lunar Dance” by Kim Ann Foxman masterfully combines soaring pads with hypnotic synths, paired with an acid bass and vocals reciting a mantra calling to spirits, legends, and myths.

This album isn’t just a celebration, it’s a conversation. A platform for understanding, for honouring and for amplifying the artistic excellence that thrives within our diverse voices. At the heart of SAL is our vibrant and supportive community, and this compilation serves to cultivate and share that sense of togetherness.
