Coflo hears a track with a dancer’s eye. The Bay Area producer, DJ and teacher came up through house dance and the Circle of Fire crew, later adding the Afro-Brazilian discipline of capoeira to his practice. In interviews, he has described movement as the gatekeeper for everything he writes or plays: if he cannot picture the dance a record might create, the idea is not finished. That perspective gives his house music its unusually physical detail, whether the arrangement is spare and percussive or expanded with keys, vocals and live musicians. Coflo has managed Carlos Mena’s Ocha Records while building his own Catch The Ghost imprint, and his releases have travelled through Yoruba, Local Talk, Freerange and Vega Records. His catalogue also documents recurring collaborations with vocalists and musicians, including Niya Wells and Loleatta Holloway-related remix work. His productions treat dance not as an audience response, but as part of the composition itself.
