Bio

Kenny Dixon, Jr.'s outspoken views on underground dance music and an early aversion to publicity put him in a league with few fellow Motor City figures other than "Mad" Mike Banks of Underground Resistance. Despite the low-key manner in which Dixon has released most of his material -- ideally suited as work credited to Moodymann as it swings from raw and mechanical to refined and elegant -- he gradually became as valued a producer as any other Detroiter. Although Dixon built his reputation with 12" singles, his widescreen approach has been just as suited for full-lengths. His discography of album projects starts with Silent Introduction (1997), an essential work that has led to more sprawling and jazz-influenced releases such as Black Mahogani (2004), the sprawling Moodymann (2014), and Taken Away (2020), which have often incorporated live instrumentation and guest vocalists.
