Established in 1999 by Simon Dunmore, Defected's first release was Soulsearcher's ‘Can't Get Enough’, which reached No. 5 in the UK singles chart. This early success was followed up with Roger Sanchez's ‘Another Chance’, which hit No. 1 in the UK singles chart in 2001. As well as a number of sister labels including DFTD, Glitterbox Recordings, Classic Music Company, Soulfuric, 4 To The Floor and Stay True Sounds, Defected also owns and manages artist projects and several catalogues of heritage house imprints.

Defected’s catalogue includes the work of artists such as Masters At Work, Honey Dijon, Inner City, Idris Elba, Dennis Ferrer, Marc Kinchen (MK), Sam Divine, Jamie Jones, John Summit, Love Regenerator (Calvin Harris), The Martinez Brothers, Hannah Wants, Duck Sauce, Gorgon City, Girls of the Internet, Peggy Gou and many more. The label also continued to release genre-defining successes including Purple Disco Machine, Oden & Fatzo and delivering a multi-single deal with British icon Idris Elba as IDRIS.

Defected runs events globally, from standalone club nights and festival stages to its many Ibiza residencies since 2003; summer of 2024 saw Defected, Glitterbox and D4 D4NCE hold three lengthy residencies at Ushuaïa Ibiza, Hï Ibiza and O Beach Ibiza respectively. Over the years we’ve signed and even discovered some legendary artists; we’ve led the way in an ever-changing industry, developing artists and even evolving ourselves – and this is just the beginning.Toolroom Records began in 2003 when emerging DJ/producer Mark Knight and brother Stuart Knight started the label. Quickly developing a fan base of professional and aspiring DJs, the label became synonymous with credible House and Tech House.‘Our mantra from the beginning was a simple one’ say Mark. ‘We wanted to be a record label run by DJs, for DJs. First Word Records was born in 2003 as a collaboration between myself (Aly Gillani - at that time a club promoter) and deejay Andy H. Frustrated by not seeing the music we loved get the exposure it deserved, we decided that there was a gap that needed filling. As the year came to an end a group of musicians, deejays, designers, emcees and producers had come together to cook up the fresh new sound of "Two Syllables", our debut compilation that was released in April 2004, preceded by a split 12" from Homecut Directive (ft Corinne Bailey Rae) and Tommy Evans.

Since then, the label has grown to house numerous artists, including Children Of Zeus, Tawiah, Kaidi Tatham, Allysha Joy, Eric Lau, Darkhouse Family, Tall Black Guy, Souleance and Quiet Dawn. The sound of our output has developed as we have as individuals – but the foundation is rooted in Hip Hop, Jazz and Soul.  This is music that's equally at home in the clubs as it is leaking out of your late-night headphones. Like Duke Ellington said - "If it sounds good, it is good".

Makin' Moves was set up in the Summer 2012, a new music and events company set up by Matt Langrish-Smith and Jamesey D. Makin' Moves nurtures up and coming talent, aswell as collaborating with established names. Matt has a wealth of experience under his belt having previously worked for dance independents Papa Records and Tribe Records UK, an internationally acclaimed label and events company. Jamesey, along with hosting his own radio show on www.housefm.net since 2004, has been an essential cog in the wheel of London's soulful & deep house scene, independently performing at most of the major parties in London swell as guest spots abroad in Japan, New York and Dubai.

The label has seen a heavy output of quality releases this year from the likes of Dazzle Drums from Japan, DJ Fudge & Hallex M from Hong Kong and UK soul singer Omar, Gianluca Pighi & Massimo Paramour from Italy and Tiger Wilson from New York
