Thierry Tomas brings jazz, sampling and the traditions of American deep house into his own rhythm-led productions. The producer and DJ, Evgeniy Nikolaev, developed his career in Moscow, including a residency at Propaganda, and now lists Lisbon as his base. His releases on labels such as Get Physical, Dessous and Highway Records connect that background with a wider house audience.
His ear for source material gives the music much of its character. The Tomat EP reworked ideas from Soviet film soundtracks and Polish jazz into house arrangements, and Tomat subsequently became the name of his own label. Other releases, including Why Why with a remix from Fred Everything, continue that interest in the space between jazz phrasing and a club groove. It is house music with a collector’s curiosity behind it, shaped as much by what Tomas listens to as by where he plays.
