Navigator connects jungle and drum and bass to the reggae sound-system culture that helped shape them. He began performing in north London’s sound-system circuit in 1979, later joining Unity Hi-Power alongside the artists who became the Ragga Twins. As rave and jungle developed, he brought that vocal experience into a new setting without abandoning his reggae roots.
His voice became familiar beyond the dance floor through BBC Radio 1’s One in the Jungle, which he presented during the 1990s. Work with the Freestylers and an ongoing partnership with Liondub extended his reach as a recording artist and live vocalist.
Navigator describes himself first as a vocalist, although he also studied sound engineering to communicate more precisely with producers. His career is built around that relationship between voice and music: hosting a room, shaping a recorded performance and carrying the sound-system tradition into new forms of bass music.
