Monetic's minimal and deep electronic music has roots in less restrained sounds. Alexander Aleynikov began as a scratch DJ in an alternative band, passing through bass-heavy and broken-beat music before developing the project after moving from Vladivostok to Moscow. Drum and bass, hip-hop, techno and disco remained part of his listening world.
Cinema offers another source of material. In a Tzinah interview, he described searching old films and artists' interviews for dialogue, then processing the samples until their origins became difficult to recognise. His method depends on routine as much as inspiration: setting aside time to write rather than waiting for an idea to arrive. Releases for Tzinah, Cyclic and Bondage, alongside work for Dub.Sphere and Inwave, connect that private world of films, samples and disciplined experimentation to the dancefloor.
