Biografia

Umwelt’s dark electro and techno retain a direct connection to the Lyon rave scene in which he started during the 1990s. Based in the French city, he works with the physical tools of that culture: vinyl for DJ sets, including copies he cuts himself, and machines for live performances. His productions combine forceful rhythms with a cinematic atmosphere, extending across a substantial catalogue and the labels he founded, New Flesh and Rave Or Die. His history includes playing Lyon’s Hypnotik squat under the name Freddy J in 1993, before his first Umwelt release in 1997. Decades later, both live sets and DJ appearances remain central to his work.
