Biografia

Robert Owens helped give early Chicago house something machines alone could not supply: a voice capable of sounding intimate, urgent and communal at once. Raised singing in church, he became a DJ before Tony Harris introduced him to Larry Heard. Owens later recalled hearing Heard’s instrumentals and immediately reaching for lyrics, a working instinct that helped shape Fingers Inc. with Heard and Ron Wilson. He also remembers filling in at the Music Box and watching the room fall into a hypnotic state as he played early Heard productions. That history is still audible in a catalogue that stretches from “Bring Down the Walls” and the Fingers Inc. album Another Side to decades of guest vocals and collaborations.
