Filterheadz are Belgian brothers Bert and Maarten Wilmaers, and the engine of their techno still carries the memory of a live band. Bert began on guitar, Maarten on drums, and both spent years in pop and rock projects before US house records—and an Underworld concert—showed them another way to use rhythm and repetition. They formed Filterheadz in the late 1990s, moving from loop-based house experiments into the percussive techno associated with “Sunshine” and “Yimanya.” The transition never erased their instrumental instincts: their tracks tend to feel played as much as programmed, with riffs and drums doing the narrative work.
