Agro’s Sub-liminal Recordings began as an event before it became a label. The British drum-and-bass producer, born Ben Carvin, has explained that he wanted an outlet for stronger unreleased tracks by himself and the talented friends around him; over time, that circle widened to artists including Leaf, Too Greezy, Warhead, Yatuza and Dreadnaught. Community also shapes Agro’s own records. His debut album Bad From Morning moved beyond a folder of DJ tools, using MC features and spoken passages to build a more personal sequence. “Haynzee,” for example, incorporates a live speech by Brooksie in memory of a close friend with whom Agro regularly played back-to-back sets. That human thread sits inside tough, direct jump-up drum and bass rather than softening it. The catalogue continues the story through Sub-liminal releases such as Harrowing Sound: The Prequel and the “Rooftop Riddim” VIP, alongside work issued by Armshouse Recordings.
