Bio

The first song Namito remembers hearing after arriving in West Berlin was Depeche Mode’s Shake the Disease. Ali Khalaj had left Iran at thirteen, after a childhood in which the revolution, war and restrictions on Western music sharply limited what he could hear; the track’s electronic sound opened an unfamiliar world. His route to the booth was equally personal. At seventeen, while living in an Osho commune, he became frustrated by the same records being played in the same order at its Far Out disco, persuaded a friend to teach him to mix, and practised there for eight months. By 1993 he was pursuing Berlin’s techno scene professionally. Later records brought those two histories together: Stone Flower and Wait Till the End place melodies and voices associated with Iranian singer Hayedeh over modern Berlin production. Namito also paints and creates visual narratives around his albums, treating music, image and autobiography as parts of one practice.
