Markee Ledge’s work connects Bristol’s drum-and-bass underground with vocal songwriting and deep dubstep. As Substance, he produced drum and bass during the 1990s, helped establish Ruffneck Ting and worked with Decoder through Breakbeat Culture. His desire to make songs as well as instrumental club music led to the formation of Kosheen, where he became a central writer and producer. The group’s debut, Resist, and singles including “Hide U” carried that work to international audiences and large festival stages. His solo career has kept both sides in play: the Elevate project paired guest singers with producers from the deeper bass-music scene, while releases on Tempa, Artikal Music UK, Uprise Audio and Zonal explored 140 BPM territory. Vocal-led drum and bass remains an important part of his studio work.
