In a 2025 interview, Peter Mac recalled turning the 2020 shutdown into a production apprenticeship: after his events business stopped, he worked through roughly 300 online tutorials. The Toronto-based artist said the technical side was initially unfamiliar, although years of musical training helped once the software began to make sense. That training included jazz and saxophone studies at Berklee College of Music, while an earlier decade in events and booking had placed him close to house culture as a promoter. Mac also traced Barking Mad Music’s 2022 name to a phrase that stuck in his head and a sideways association with Breaking Bad. The label became a home for his deep, soulful and Latin-leaning house, including solo records and collaborations. El Ritmo Oscuro, Bad Ass and Keepin’ It Real reflect the productive second career that grew from that lockdown decision.
