Bio

Long before Lauer’s bright synthesizer lines reached club records, Phillip Lauer was learning how instruments fit together. He began piano lessons at six, later played bass and drums in bands, and issued his first record in 2000 under the name Plenty Ammo. That multi-instrumental grounding helps explain the songcraft beneath his dance music: chords, arpeggios and hooks are allowed to carry as much personality as the groove. Lauer’s solo catalogue sits alongside a web of collaborations, most notably Tuff City Kids with Gerd Janson. The project’s name began as a joke lifted from a toilet-wall tag, yet the partnership became a prolific remix and production outlet; Janson’s advice to strip away competing elements also left a lasting mark on Lauer’s arrangements. Based in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region, he has resisted the assumption that an electronic artist must move to Berlin.
