Byron Stingily’s falsetto is one of the defining voices of Chicago house. As lead singer of Ten City, he helped bring the expressiveness of soul and disco into songs such as Devotion and That’s the Way Love Is. His solo career kept that connection to the dance floor intact, with Get Up (Everybody), You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) and his own version of That’s the Way Love Is all reaching the top of the US dance chart.
Stingily is also a songwriter whose starting point is often a message rather than a beat. Stories shared by friends have become lyrics, and he has described leaving space for singers and musicians to contribute arrangements of their own. That collaborative outlook runs through his renewed partnership with Marshall Jefferson: the pair returned as Ten City in 2021 with Be Free, continuing a body of work in which emotional directness and club rhythm are closely joined.
