Chris Chambers keeps the percussive energy of early-2000s tribal and funky techno at the centre of his music. Rapid mixing and spontaneous effects give his DJ sets their restless character, while his productions draw on the meeting point between hardgroove, funk and melody. He established Phunkation in 2011 as an outlet for that sound and a meeting place for established producers and newer artists.

His route into techno began with acid trance in the 1990s, followed by early experiments assembling beats and samples. That background helps explain an approach in which rhythm is something to reshape and animate, rather than merely repeat. The Submissions and Recycled Phunk series form substantial bodies of his work; his partnership with Homma Honganji on Phunk Mob also brought Phunkation's long-running musical direction to vinyl.
