Biografía
Kara Okay makes club music with room for a crowd to sing along. The Amsterdam producer draws on 1990s trance, piano-led dance records and old-school house, folding those bright melodic elements into faster rhythms and the heavier bass of UK club music. His name plays on karaoke, a nod to the vocal hooks that run through his work.
A break from kitesurfing gave him time to take production more seriously. Early encouragement came through Benwal, who played one of his tracks and passed it to Job Jobse; hearing Jobse play it at Lentekabinet became an important confirmation that the music could connect beyond his own circle.
For Kara Okay, emotional music need not tell an autobiographical story. He is interested in creating a feeling in the moment, often developing ideas while travelling between gigs and testing them soon afterwards. Partnerships with Tjade, NewTone and DART give that approach different shapes, from buoyant piano-and-synth conversations to vocals designed for a shared, full-volume response.
