Bop makes detailed electronic music in which tiny rhythmic shifts can carry as much weight as a bass drop. The Saint Petersburg-born, UK-based producer helped shape microfunk, bringing the spaciousness of ambient music and the precision of minimal drum & bass into the same frame. His Med School debut Clear Your Mind introduced that approach in 2009; subsequent work has explored digital fragmentation, dub techno and less predictable relationships between tempo and movement.
He is also the founder of Microfunk Music, a home for artists including Nuage, Synkro and Oak. The label extends his taste beyond his own productions, with cassette releases and tape-based performances reflecting an interest in physical formats as creative tools. His work with Subwave opens another route through the music: their album Renaissance connects drum & bass with the melodic pull of synth-pop and other electronic traditions.
Bop’s later releases for Shall Not Fade and related projects have brought UK garage and breakbeat further into view. Whether working at drum & bass speed or loosening the pulse, he keeps the focus on texture, atmosphere and small, carefully placed events.
