For Fred P, deep house is a way to connect inner reflection with the shared experience of a dance floor. The New York-raised, Berlin-based producer and DJ, Fred Peterkin, also works as Black Jazz Consortium, moving between house, ambient music and jazz-inflected electronics. His early relationship with music was shaped by New York record shops and clubs; production lessons with Greg Spooner and after-hours sessions at Platinum Island Studios followed in the early 1990s. Soul People Music and Private Society have given him outlets for both club material and longer, more contemplative work, including States of Bliss. Private Society also developed a direct subscription relationship with listeners, making room for demos, edits and pieces created on tour. At Panorama Bar and Tresor, his sets can range more broadly than his studio reputation suggests, taking in gospel, Latin and tribal house alongside deep instrumental tracks.
