David Penn’s house career has included more than one beginning. The Madrid musician studied piano from the age of nine and first broke internationally in 1995 through Kadoc’s ‘The Night Train’. He later reset under his own name, collaborated extensively with DJ Chus and built a sound that could draw from disco, soul, jazz and Latin music without losing the directness of a club record. Penn founded Urbana Recordings in 2003 to gather his productions in one place and present Spanish house beyond the domestic scene. He has remained loyal to house even when industry fashion moved elsewhere; in a 2018 interview, he recalled resisting pressure to choose EDM or techno and argued that evolution should not erase an artist’s essence. That continuity is audible in his DJ work and long-running Urbana Radio Show: bright piano and organ hooks, full-bodied vocals and rhythmic energy shaped for people who want something more purposeful than the songs already on their phones.
