Juan Laya makes disco with a musician's attachment to its arrangements, rhythms and sense of shared pleasure. Growing up in a Venezuelan household, he heard music from across the Americas, but the sound of 1970s disco became a lasting reference. Funk, soul and Latin influences now meet in his work as one half of Los Charly's Orchestra with Jorge Montiel.

In London, the pair run Imagenes as a label and production home. Laya contributes drums and percussion to recordings that also make room for live bass, guitar, keyboards and singers such as Xantoné Blacq and Andre Espeut. His affection for older music also leads to reworks: he has connected one Julio Iglesias edit to memories of his mother playing the original at home. For Laya, drawing on the past is part of making music for a present-day dancefloor, with live playing and collaboration central to the process.
