William “Reelsoul” Rodriquez learned keyboards by ear, but his musical education began even earlier in his father’s record collection. In a 2021 interview, the Los Angeles-born producer remembered collecting 45s as a small child and absorbing everything from rock and Latin music to Cerrone, Tower of Power and Change. House arrived through a cousin’s Strictly Rhythm and Nervous records, adding a club framework to those melodic instincts. Rodriquez has since become a prolific writer, remixer and producer in soulful house, releasing through his own Reelsoul Musik and working repeatedly with DJ Spen, Quantize Recordings and vocalists including Michelle Weeks and Brutha Basil. Later projects include The Praise Party and a remake of the Police’s “When the World Is Running Down” with Spen and DJ Meme. His productions place musicianship inside the groove: keyboards, harmonies and vocals serve the dance floor without being reduced to decoration.
