Bassface Sascha helped establish jungle and drum and bass in Germany, with his early-1990s sets at Mannheim’s milk! club placing him at the centre of the Rhine-Neckar scene. His musical background was broader than any one genre: he began with drums as a child, then mixed hip-hop, rare groove, disco and R&B before moving through acid house and techno.

In 1994, he founded Smokin’ Drum Recordings as a home for his own productions and emerging artists. DJing took him to events including Love Parade, Mayday, Nature One and One Nation, while his sets developed around a wide view of drum and bass, from liquid and deeper tracks to jump-up and neurofunk.

Four-deck mixing became part of his performance approach, alongside a continuing interest in older records and new production methods. His work links the early German breakbeat scene with the many directions drum and bass has taken since.
