Federsen works in the deep end of techno, where small changes in a chord, a delay or a bass line can alter the whole atmosphere. The San Francisco-based musician Chris Kelly also runs Fifth Interval, a vinyl label connected to his interest in dub-rooted electronic music. His own earliest turning point was hearing a Derrick May demo tape in 1988. That long relationship with electronic sound has developed into patient, stripped-back productions, with releases through outlets including Etui and Syncrophone. “Deep Sequence” captures the approach clearly: resonant low frequencies, restrained drums and chords given room to linger.
