Biografie

Laurent Garnier is a central figure in French electronic music, but DJing remains the heart of his work. His musical outlook took shape in Manchester’s acid-house years, including sets at the Haçienda, before he helped build a new club culture in Paris through nights at La Luna, the Palace and the Rex Club. His sets draw on a wide musical vocabulary, reflecting a curiosity that has never been confined to techno. As a producer and label founder, Garnier has helped create space for that same freedom. He established F Communications with Eric Morand in 1994 and later co-founded COD3 QR with Scan X. His work also reaches into film scores, contemporary dance and collaborations outside club music, including the psychedelic rock duo the Limiñanas. Performance offers another outlet for experimentation. In the L.B.S. project, Garnier joined keyboardist Benjamin Rippert and Scan X in extended sets that combined DJing with live improvisation. His book Electrochoc, written with David Brun-Lambert, tells the story of a life spent inside dance music’s changing scenes. Across those different roles, the connection between the music and the people in the room remains essential.
