Pfirter has recalled arriving at Berghain as an ordinary clubgoer after having played there several times—and being refused at the door until photographs helped establish the connection. The anecdote suits Juan Pablo Pfirter’s unvarnished relationship with techno: the Argentine producer has built his practice around repetition, physical rooms and close attention to how a crowd changes. He began learning to DJ as a teenager in Buenos Aires, then created MindTrip with Jonas Kopp around 2006 as a platform for their music and that of friends. After relaunching the label with a stronger vinyl focus, Pfirter continued using it to introduce artists as well as his own work. In interviews he has reduced his production philosophy to three requirements: timelessness, urgency and tension, whether the result is direct dance-floor techno or ambient material. His later catalogue, including a sustained run on Paralelo, keeps those principles audible through dense rhythm, pressure and controlled space.
