After three decades with Cubase, Gregor Tresher says opening it still feels like coming home. The Frankfurt producer began DJing on the city’s club circuit in the early 1990s and first released extensively through his Sniper Mode alias before establishing his own name with records such as “Still,” “Neon” and “A Thousand Nights.” He founded Break New Soil in 2009, using the label for a sequence of albums as well as music by emerging and established producers. Tresher’s studio practice has also become increasingly collaborative. Producing Sven Väth’s Catharsis changed his earlier preference for working alone; later sessions with Pig&Dan used a relay-like process in which melodic ideas, arrangement and final mixing passed between the three producers. Even as his catalogue moves between techno, electro and more melodic forms, Tresher returns to one measure: music should retain its identity beyond the moment in which it was made.
