Jocelyn Brown was singing in Brooklyn church choirs before her voice became a fixture on dance records. Born in Kinston, North Carolina, into a musical family, she moved from gospel into secular session work and sang on studio projects including Musique, Inner Life and the Salsoul Orchestra. Her own name arrived in 1984 with “Somebody Else’s Guy”, which she wrote with her sister after the two of them had been through the situation it describes; the single reached number two on the US R&B chart. In 1991 “Always There”, recorded with the British group Incognito, reached number six in the UK, and she has also worked with Todd Terry. The American singer has lived in London since 1990.
